There are a lot of formulas you learn in math and physics. I love formulas. I love the “plug and chug” theory for solving complex problems. Yea, I loved math. It is so “in the box” thinking. You do not have to deal with any subjective grading either.

Some things in life are a lot like math formulas. We are taught from kindergarten through college how to get A’s, how to get ahead, how to be respected in the world.

We learn the formulas for getting ahead….

for making more money…

for being healthy…happy….responsible…even more beautiful.

I read an autobiography by the entrepreneur, Tony Hsieh, the guy who bought and sold Zappos.com. He had the typical Asian American parents who expected good grades, high SAT scores, expertise in three musical instruments, Harvard University, an MD or a PhD.  He had to practice three instruments every day.  Against his parents plans, he chose the atypical career path with the atypical results–and still got prestige and a truck load of money.
People respect those that achieve, that make good money. It is a sign of respectability on earth. Even within the Mormon community.
What about the formula for not becoming of the world?
Let’s see, what is that formula?
