I got up early this morning to catch some views of the bloodmoon on Passover, April 4, 2015 and read what the scriptures have to say about the moon being turned to blood. The science of a lunar eclipse is explained here.
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to the Church, at Kirtland, Ohio, March 7, 1831:
And before the day of the Lord shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be turned into blood, and the stars fall from heaven. (D&C 45:42)
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to Orson Pratt, at Fayette, New York, November 4, 1830:
But before that great day shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be turned into blood; and the stars shall refuse their shining, and some shall fall, and great destructions await the wicked. (D&C 34:9)
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet at Kirtland, Ohio, December 27 and 28, 1832, and January 3, 1833. The Prophet designated it as the “‘olive leaf’ … plucked from the Tree of Paradise, the Lord’s message of peace to us.” The revelation was given after high priests at a conference prayed “separately and vocally to the Lord to reveal his will unto us concerning the upbuilding of Zion.”:
For not many days hence and the earth shall tremble and reel to and fro as a drunken man; and the sun shall hide his face, and shall refuse to give light; and the moon shall be bathed in blood; and the stars shall become exceedingly angry, and shall cast themselves down as a fig that falleth from off a fig tree. (D&C 88:87)
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, in the presence of six elders, at Fayette, New York, September 1830:
But, behold, I say unto you that before this great dayshall come the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall be turned into blood, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and there shall be greater signs in heaven above and in the earth beneath; (D&C 29:14)
The Acts of the Apostles, Peter stands up, testifies of the resurrection, and quotes the prophet Joel:
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: (Acts 2:17-20)
John sees the events when the sixth seal is opened:
And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; (Rev 6:12)
The Prophet Joel prophecies of the last days:
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come. (Joel 2:31)
